In the summer of 2023, Gear Up Florida embarked on yet another remarkable journey, continuing its mission to promote acceptance and understanding for people with disabilities. Since its inception in 1997, this event, organized by The Ability Experience, the philanthropic arm of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, has touched countless lives and made a lasting impact on individuals with differences across the state.
On May 13, the dedicated team of cyclists gathered at the picturesque shores of Miami, ready to embark on their 14-day adventure. Their destination was the State Capitol in Tallahassee, where they would culminate their efforts to spread a powerful message of acceptance and understanding. Throughout their journey, they pedaled through breathtaking Florida orange fields, experienced the beauty of the Gulf Coast, explored the vibrant city of Orlando, and embraced the excitement of Jacksonville.
One event highlight was the friendship visit to Jacksonville, where the Gear Up Florida participants had the opportunity to connect with individuals from Club Challenge and the Adult Day Training program. Over a shared lunch, lasting bonds were formed, and stories were shared, fostering a deeper sense of understanding and unity among the participants. In addition to the heartwarming connections, the team also enjoyed some well-deserved fun in the sun, engaging in yard games at Camp Chowenwaw Park and creating memories that would be cherished forever.
However, Gear Up Florida is much more than just a cycling event. It serves as a powerful platform to spread awareness and inclusion throughout the state, capturing the attention of local media and generating meaningful conversations. Each year, the event also provides additional support to organizations through grants, further amplifying its impact on the community.
